Grade 1 Gazette

The end of the school year is near and we've had the weather to prove it!  We are wrapping up the school year fast, it has flown by!!  Please look for your child's grade card in their Friday folder next week.  We will be sending home Friday folders on Thursday.  We will have Field Day on Friday.  Your child won't need anything for field day, however please dress your child in play clothes that can get wet or dirty.  Also, we'll be outside all morning so please send your child wearing sunscreen.

We all can imagine what Little Red Ridding Hood sounded like when she said "Grandmother, what big teeth you have!"  We are switching gears this week and are doing Reader's Theater instead of reading groups.  We have been talking about the importance of reading with expression.  We all agree it's pretty boring to listen to a story when the reader sounds like a robot.  The students have been practicing reading their lines over and over so they can use appropriate phrasing and make their voices sound like their character that they will play in the performance.  Our plan is to videotape these performances so be on the lookout for an email with more on how you can see and hear what great expression we use in first grade!

We are wrapping up the year with subtraction.  We've been working very hard this week on using strategies such as counting back or counting on.  Students have been using 100s charts, number lines, and their fingers to count back or count on to find the difference between two numbers.  Sometimes we can even solve subtraction problems by using an addition problem we know.  It's really exciting to see students applying the addition facts they know so fluently to help them solve subtraction problems in the same fact family.  For example: 4+6=10, so 10-6=4.

  • Field Day/Last Day, May 24th, dismissal at 1:15.
  • May 30th - summer school open house 4:30-6:30
  • June 3rd - first day of summer school
