Grade 1 Gazette

What a fun week!  We all enjoyed our field trip on Tuesday, despite the rainy weather.  We are very grateful to our Partners in Education, Walk About Acres for their hospitality.  We all made beeswax candles and ate honey ice cream, what a treat!  If you’ve never been I’m sure your first grader would love to show you around.  We finished the week with Science Olympiad and all enjoyed the hands on activities.

Math
We’re having an art show and YOU’RE invited!  In math we are talking about measuring and we read a book called Measuring for the Art Show.  In the story a little girl and her class have to measure artwork that will be displayed for an art show.  The first graders have decided that we should have our own art show and boy have we been doing lots of measuring to get ready for it.  This is COMPLETELY their idea and they are PUMPED!!  On May 5th our art show will be on display during the Picnic on the Prairie from 2:00-4:00.  Our artwork will be for sale for $0.25 a piece - what a bargain!  The kids have had lots of suggestions on what our money should be used for, from art supplies for our school, to a donation to help kids with cancer.  We will be voting as a grade level to decide what the money will go towards.  We hope you’ll be there to support us!  It is incredible to see their minds at work preparing for this big event!

Reminders
  • Picnic on the Prairie - May 5th 2:00-4:00
  • Last day of School May 24th – Early release day

Math
This week we have been learning about fractions of shapes.  We have divided circles and rectangles into two and four equal parts.  We described the equal parts of the shapes using the words halves, fourths and quarters.  To celebrate our hard work, today we put our fraction knowledge to use and made bagel pizzas! The kids made one half pepperoni, one quarter with cheese and the other quarter (or forth) Canadian bacon.  When splitting pizza or food at home, talk about the different fractions with your kids! J

Reading

We've been busy this week talking about all of the things that great readers do when they make a mistake.  We know ALL readers make mistakes, it’s what we do about that mistake that matters.  Great readers listen and watch for their mistakes.  They check to make sure what they've read looks right, makes sense and sounds right.  If it doesn't  they go back and fix it.  As you listen to your child read compliment them when they go back and reread to fix a mistake.  This is called self-correcting.

Math

This week we've been learning all about 3D shapes.  We've identified cylinders, spheres, pyramids, rectangular prisms and triangular prisms.  As mathematicans we talk about how many flat sides or faces the shapes have and how many corners or angles they have.  I've been so impressed with what a wonderful job students have done noticing what makes each of these shapes unique.

Grade 1 Gazette

We had a great week getting back into the routine of things and to top it off, we had some beautiful spring weather today!

Reading and Making Mental Images
As books get harder and have more words, there are fewer pictures on the pages.  As a reader, it is important to make a picture in your head, a mental image, about what is happening in the story.  The picture in your head in formed by the words on the page and your background knowledge, your schema.  This week we read books, but I did not share the pictures with the students.  They had to use the words from the book along with their background knowledge to form a mental image of what was happening in the book.  They made mental images of what a night in the country looked like, what a little boy’s room might look like if he turned it into a forest for his pet salamander, and what a house looked like when everyone was sleeping.  Talk to your child about the mental images they formed in those books but also do it with books that you read at home with them.  Read a few pages without showing them the pictures and then have them describe what they see in their mind.

Important Dates
On Wednesday, April 17th, we will share our I-Movie projects on our animals with you at the Brown Bag Lunch.  Lunch will begin a little early that day at 11:45.
There is a note about our field trip to Walk About Acres in the folder this week.  Please return it by next Friday, April 12th so we can let Ms. Melissa, in the kitchen, know how many sack lunches we will need that day.
